Grab your hooks, dear yarnlings, and settle in for a journey that loops and twists through time — because today, we're unraveling the delightful, knotty, and often mysterious history of crochet!
๐งต Before There Were Hooks...
Long before we were binge-watching crochet tutorials and stashing skeins like squirrels before winter, humans were already experimenting with looped thread. While it might feel ancient, crochet’s roots are surprisingly modern.
Some believe it evolved from “tambour embroidery,” a fine-chain stitching method done through fabric with a tiny hook. Sometime in the early 1800s, though, the hook went rogue — and freeform looping began. Thus, crochet as we know it was born.
๐งถ From Aristocracy to Cottage Craft
In 19th-century Europe, crochet hooked the hearts of people everywhere. Irish women especially turned it into a livelihood during the Great Famine. Their delicate lace became known as “Irish Crochet,” and it was sold across continents to support struggling families.
Even Queen Victoria bought Irish lace to aid the cause — and rumor has it she crocheted herself!

๐ Patterns and Progress
The Victorian era brought printed patterns in women’s magazines — giving birth to the modern pattern-collecting craze (and your growing WIP pile!). Crocheters shared their creations across borders, laying the foundation for today’s tight-knit (pun intended) fiber arts community.
๐ Modern Crochet: Not Just Granny Squares Anymore
From the bold hues of the 1970s to TikTok-ready amigurumi, crochet has never stopped evolving. Makers now craft fashion, home goods, toys, and protest art — while also embracing eco-friendly yarn and ethical sourcing.
Crochet today? It’s not just cool — it’s conscious.
๐ Stitching the Future (and the Road!)
At Crazy Yarn Lady HQ (my yarn lair and soon-to-be mobile shop!), we believe crochet ties the past to the present, creativity to commerce, and maker to maker. Whether you’re learning your first slip knot or designing your own patterns, you're joining a centuries-old legacy.
So next time someone asks, “Is that knitting?” smile sweetly, twirl your hook, and say:
“No darling — it’s crochet. And it’s got a history as rich and textured as the yarn in my hands.”
