Our story

I’m Lona Smith—founder of Crazy Yarn Lady—and a lifelong maker, community builder, and creative problem-solver.

Our history

I’ve been crocheting since childhood, but Crazy Yarn Lady was born from something deeper than a love of yarn. It grew out of a belief that creative work can be practical and powerful—that fiber arts can build confidence, connection, and community, especially in places where access and opportunity are limited.

Since launching Crazy Yarn Lady, the business has grown beyond its inception phase into a working creative enterprise with an active community outreach program, expanding partnerships, and a clear mission: to make fiber arts accessible, inclusive, and meaningful for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Alongside building the business, I’m completing my college degree in business, bringing structure, strategy, and sustainability to the creative work I’ve done my entire life. That education has helped me move Crazy Yarn Lady from an idea into a growing operation—one that blends creativity with planning, accountability, and long-term vision.

At the heart of this work is Crazy Yarn Club, our community outreach program. Through workshops, kits, and partnerships, we bring fiber arts into underserved spaces—supporting mental wellness, skill-building, and creative expression where it’s often overlooked. The program is active, evolving, and deeply rooted in real community needs, not trends.

Crazy Yarn Lady is still growing—and that’s intentional. I believe in building things thoughtfully, with integrity, sustainability, and people at the center. Whether I’m teaching, designing, planning programs, or preparing for the next phase of expansion, my goal stays the same:

To create community, one stitch at a time.
