Colorburst 3rd Street: a community yarn bombing

Get ready for a burst of color! Join us in Cedar Rapids, IA, for a vibrant community yarn bombing project on 3rd Street. This exciting event is a wonderful opportunity to express your creativity, meet fellow yarn enthusiasts, and transform our urban landscape with beautiful, handcrafted art. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the chaos that is creativity and bring joy to our community.

Why community events matter

They bring people back to each other in a real, tangible way. In a world that often feels disconnected, gathering face-to-face to create something together builds relationships, trust, and a shared sense of belonging. Public art installations take that a step further by turning everyday spaces into something meaningful—something created by the community, for the community. They invite people to slow down, notice, and feel connected to where they live. Creativity becomes the bridge. It gives people a voice, a sense of pride, and a way to leave their mark. That’s what this is really about—not just yarn, but creating moments, connections, and a community people can see, touch, and be part of.

Get involved and celebrate creativity

This project brings together individuals, groups, and organizations to create handmade fiber art pieces that will be installed throughout downtown Cedar Rapids.

Participants can contribute in a way that works for them:

• Attend a beginner-friendly workshop
• Create pieces independently at home
• Participate as a group or organization
• Volunteer during installation

We’ll provide guidance on:

• Types of pieces to create (tree wraps, mandalas, panels)
• Suggested sizes for different spaces
• Opportunities to contribute individually or as part of a group

As the project grows, installations will begin appearing throughout downtown.
